What is My City and how does local browsing work?

My City is an optional preferred local City that East Texas Locals remembers on this browser or device. If you browse another city, your saved My City does not change.

What My City means

My City is an optional preferred local City that East Texas Locals remembers on this browser or device.

It helps East Texas Locals make a sensible local default for a new search.

My City is not proof of where you live, a Business location, a Business Coverage Area, an Official Partner Territory, Membership, entitlement, or account authorization.

How to choose or change My City

You set, change, or clear My City from the My City control in the site header.

  • Choose My City when you have not saved one yet.
  • Change when you want a different saved City.
  • No My City clears the saved City.

Only an explicit My City action changes the saved preference. Searching or opening another City does not.

My City and the City you are browsing

My City is a default, not a lock. You can choose another City for the search you are doing.

If your My City is Tyler and you choose Longview for a search, the search uses Longview.

If you open a Longview Directory page, that page remains Longview.

Browsing or searching another City does not change My City. Your saved My City stays Tyler until you explicitly change it.

Using My City for local discovery

After this browser confirms a saved My City, East Texas Locals may use it as the starting City for a new homepage search or a new search from a Directory page that does not already have a City.

A search or City page you already opened stays as you requested. My City does not quietly turn every Directory page into your saved City.

When a saved My City is confirmed, East Texas Locals may show a shortcut such as Browse Tyler businesses. That shortcut opens the ordinary Directory page for that City. It does not create a separate My City directory or a special My City web address.

Using ETL on another browser or device

My City is saved on the current browser or device.

It is not currently an account-synced preference. Setting My City on one browser or device does not make it appear on another.

What My City does not do

My City does not use GPS or precise location. East Texas Locals does not need to infer or verify where you physically live in order to use My City.

If a previously saved City is no longer available, East Texas Locals may ask you to choose another City.

If City information is temporarily unavailable, East Texas Locals does not erase the saved preference just because it cannot confirm the City at that moment.

You can still browse East Texas Locals normally.
